Description
Enjoy hojicha, or hoji cha, in the evening for its mild flavour and low levels of caffeine. To make hojicha green tea leaves are roasted at high temperatures, giving the tea leaves a reddish-brown colour. The roasting process changes the flavour of the tea, mellowing the strong vegetative flavours usually associated with Japanese green teas and giving a toasted, almost caramel flavour. The roasting also lowers the caffeine in the tea, hence its popularity in Japan as an evening tea, as well being a popular tea choice for children and the elderly.
